Microsoft Office 365 ($20 Per User Per Month at Microsoft 365 for Business) (Opens in a new window) is a familiar name to many as it is one of the leading services in the IT world. There are three key services that tie together to form the basis of AIP. Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions.
AIP by itself will not prohibit users from sharing these documents outside the company it's a form of notification-and one that can directly affect security policy. AIP, conversely, simply applies labels to documents in the form of a header, footer, or watermark. Azure RMS could be thought of as Digital Rights Management (DRM) for business resources. For example, users can specify that a document or email can be sent only to colleagues within the company and cannot be printed, which prevents the document from being shared using two of the most common methods in the corporate world. Azure RMS lets you protect documents from reaching unauthorized sources, either within or outside your company. Understanding the difference between Azure RMS and AIP is an important aspect in deciding if your organization has a requirement for the services. The combination of AIP and Azure RMS provides a suite of document protection tools that will be a boon to document-heavy businesses and Chief Security Officers (CSOs) in most enterprise organizations. It's based on technology Microsoft purchased through the recent acquisition (Opens in a new window) of Secure Islands. Currently in Preview release, AIP builds on existing Microsoft services, starting up where the current Azure Rights Management Service (Azure RMS) leaves off. Microsoft's new Azure Information Protection (AIP) is the company's latest foray into software and services geared toward helping companies protect their intellectual property (IP) and add a more granular security layer to their current document management (DM) implementations.
